access internet via another LAN

Have two networks - one for the office
and one for accounts. Accounts want to
use the office broadband. Office router
(which is on a autosensing 24port switch)
has IP address which is also the gateway
address on the office workstations,so
they have internet access.
Accounts have same setup ie a single
server with workstations connected but
via a zenet 8 port hub - assume ip address
structure is different plus office LAN is windows
& accounts is novell. A spare network port for
the office LAN resides in accounts -
is linking the office port to the zenet hub
the right direction to go to enable accounts
to use the internet ?
If I cannot change the accounts workstations gateway
is the anotherway of getting internet explorer to
use the router address instead of it detecting network
settings automatically ?
any help would be appriciated.

Hi Tim,

Set the gateway on the accounts to point towards
the office gateway. Assuming they can reach the
gateway e.g., they are on the same subnet or have
a route to the office network.

Let's shorten the description to just relevant information.

You have two LANs, correct?

What are the IP Ranges of each?

If they are not the same subnet, is there a router between them?

What device do you use the "share" the Internet connection with the LAN?

Phil.
yes 2 LANS.
(not running a dhcp so all
office wkstns / server have fixed ip.
The router is the same - however its
default is to act as a dhcp.
There are only 10 & 5 wkstns on each)

ip range ? all I can say is only last 3 digits
of ip change so 1 to ....
accounts is a dhcp but until the account director
is in I can see the typical ip address they use.

everything plugs into autosensing switch
via cat5. accounts has a basic hub - again
everything plugs into this.

does this help?

Ok, we're getting closer...

The "router"....do you mean a "real" LAN Router that sits between two LAN IP
Subnets?,...or do you mean some kind of Internet Sharing Device sitting at
the edge of the LAN next to the Internet? (there is a *big* difference
between the two).

Well, it is important to know. You are surely using RFC Private addressing
like the rest of us. They are no "secret",...we all use a block(s) from one
of the same choices. So you can say what they are.

Don't worry about the switches/hubs or cable types. They won't come into
play.

Ok,...I gonna guess at what I think you have and what you need to do. If I
have the wrong idea, correct me in the next post.

Let's say that:...

Office Subnet = 192.168.1.x
Accounts Subnet = 192.168.2.x
Router between subnets = 192.168.1.254 & 192.168.2.254
Internet Sharing Device = 192.168.1.1

Hosts on Office subnet use 192.168.1.254 as Default Gateway
Hosts on Accounts subnet use 192.168.2.254 as Default Gateway
Router itself uses 192.168.1.1 as the Default Gateway (Internet sharing
device)

Internet Sharing Device requires a Static Route to the Accounts subnet
(192.168.2.x) using 192.168.1.254 as the path.

thanks for the help Phil.

found out accounts didn't use ip's (novell system).
so just configured gateway etc and it worked.
one other problem i'm having is mapping drives
to the office server via an account client.
both office & accounts have the same ip address
format and there is only one router for both
LANS and thats the ADSL broadband router.
i'd be gratefull if you could help.
(in time I'd probably solve it through an
assortment of microsoft how to do's and trial
and errors but as the networks are in use all
the time i don't get a chance to mess about
trying things out)

Cheers
Tim
