Hello,

We have a home network with cable access and I need to retrieve files for
someone (access the hard drive) who's computer has a temporarily disabled
win98a OS (Explorer.exe error and missing shlwapi.dll file). It is cable
ready (until Sunday was working fine and used the same cable provider that
we use), and I wondered if I can hook it up to our existing network somehow?

I am running Win XP.

I recall there is a way to hook up the HD to a working computer, but I
really don't want to take it apart if not necessary. I'll check back in a
bit.

Thanks, Jeanne

If you can't start Windows on the PC, you cannot access it over a network.

I can boot with ProgMan shell running in leu of Explorer, but it seems it
and wnexe are the only applications running (ctrl alt del). Anything I try
to run using ProgMan returns the message "Not enough memory to run..."

Any thoughts? (If interested, more in depth info in

There are a couple of ways to retrieve your files:

- The easy way (if you believe in making regular backups): Get them
from your backup medium.

- The hard way (if you feel that hard disks and operating systems
never fail): Install the disk from the problem PC as a slave disk
in your XP PC, then copy the files across.

Thank you. I fear the second way is my only option for quick retrieval of
their important files (I am repairing the PC for someone else who admits to
_never_ backing up files). At least they have been following my advice to
save all current work files to folders within their main document folder.

It's a real bear and quite a test for me.)

Isn't there a way to connect the drive in place of my CD rom drive just long
enough to snag the files? Then I will have time to attempt to repair their
existing system without pressure.

Hmmm. one thought... I ordered a new 40G HD for them for eventual
installation with a newer OS; I 'spose I could do that now and after
installing their Win98a onto the new one I could move over pertinent files
after. They have a lot of unusual peripherals and settings I'd have to
reinstall and don't have that kind of time right now. They really just want
their system back up and running for now.

Tell the person that there are two groups of people: Those who back up
their important files every week (or more often), and those who do not do
it just yet. Ultimately, everybody ends up in the first group. The
transition
can be very painful.

Sure - just move the ribbon cable from the CD drive over to the
faulty disk. If the able runs off the secondary disk controller then
you don't even need to change the master/slave jumper on the disk.

I use DriveImage extensively, and it lets me install a vanilla version of
Win98 in 15 minutes. I then spend another 30 minutes loading the PC-
specific drivers. After one hour I have a brand-new, fully operative system.
This is much less than the 2 or three hours I would spend trying to fix
the problem (with no guarantee of success!).

CD Ribbon cable to the faulty disk it is, thanks; my CD indeed runs off the
secondary disk controller. I'm still searching for the correct version of
the problematic (rather MIA) file which I believe is the cause of this all
(the shlwapi.dll file) and copying it over to the system folder.

I really think there is a simple solution to this. I believe it (the
shlwapi.dll) either didn't get installed properly during an ie6 update or
the original win98a version was deleted during a rogue kids Battleship game
that was installed the same day as the update (and the subsequent boot
failure).

I've got to get this resolved by tomorrow morning in some way, at least get
some backed up files for them to use elsewhere, but preferably getting the
OS working again. Problem is I can't let it go without a fight.
