I have a SBS 2003 Premium server that is acting domain server. I have a
server 2003 standard server that I had joined to the domain and made a member
domain server by running dcpromo.exe and adding it as a member server to the
existing domain. This server’s computer name is DVR, and as you might be
able to tell, I am trying to run some cctv DVR software on it and store the
video feeds to a mirror. Well, none the less I had some driver issues with
the capture card installed and it had already gotten pretty messy from trying
different software packages on it, so I decided to just re-load windows.
Now, however, it is telling me that I can’t double-click and run a software
setup .exe from a mapped drive on our file server because of access
permissions or something, but I can double click and run any other file, and
I can copy the whole folder over and run it locally.
BACKGROUND:
SBS 2003 (Torment2k3) is domain controller
Server 2003 Std. (DVR) is member domain controller
About 2-3 months ago or so I made DVR a member domain controller just by
using the setup server wizard on SBS 2003….all it does is run a wizard that
sets up the joining of a computer to a domain and gives it a static IP
address if you would like….then you go to
http://torment2k3/connectcomputer
(or something like that) from the computer you’re wanting to join to the
domain and it runs an active x script that literally just joins you to the
domain and is supposed to, if you choose, assign a static IP. After that, I
ran dcpromo to make it a member server of an existing domain.
I had some driver issues with a capture card on the DVR server, so I had to
reload the machine. 1st steps taken where running dcpromo again and demoting
the server. Reboot. Then I disjoined the computer from the domain. Reboot
into windows installation…meanwhile on the SBS server I deleted the computer
account and the user account.
Windows got re-installed on the DVR server. I re-added the DVRAdmin user
account back to the SBS server. I ran the server setup wizard again from the
SBS server and joined DVR back to the domain. Reboot. I ran dcpromo and
added DVR server back as a member server of an existing domain. I did
everything the exact same procedure that I did a couple of months ago to get
the DVR server setup. Yes, the DVR server still kept its DVR computer name.
PROBLEM:
Everything’s going fine until I try to access the mapped drives from the
file server and install some of our software on it. It keeps telling me I
don’t have access permissions, “Windows cannot access the specified device,
path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the
item”. And this is after already browsing around the mapped drive to find
the setup files for whatever program I might be trying to install. I can
even load the pdf help docs and all that, just not run executables; however,
I can just copy the whole folder over locally to DVR machine and run it from
there. I right – click and check the share properties and the user account
being used by DVR machine is listed with full control and when I go check the
owner of the items, it actually has the DVRAdmin user as being one of the
owners of the objects.
I’m confused on that one. Do you have any clues?
I went through and demoted the server again and dis-joined it from the
domain again and just tried accessing the file server and other computers and
have to type in username/password. I even tried THE domain administrator
account and it did the same thing. It doesn’t matter whether or not this
computer is joined to the domain or not, or whether it’s using the DVRAdmin
account or THE domain admin account. It just won’t let this machine access
the files?????? DVRAdmin has domain user/domain admin/ a few other group
accounts that it is members of. I don’t understand this….that it doesn’t
like a certain machine???
If you have any ideas on this I would greatly appreciate it.
