Hello.

I would like to be able to power an AP from a car battery. Anyone
know of a site that has directions for doing so?

I need this for site surveys.

Thanks.

You can get power inverters in various power capacities from many auto or
electronics stores.

Hi. Thanks for the response.

I know about inverters...but how do I connect the inverter to the
battery?

plug it into the cig lighter or power adapter -

However you connect it to the battery, make sure there is a fuse
somewhere in the 12V circuit. A car battery cam provide an immense
amount of current into a short circuit - enough to melt wires.

consider also you don't need AC power for the AP if it has a power
supply of less than 12V a DC regulator will do the job.

OK ok ok ....

I didn't make myself clear.....

I want to carry the battery around while doing a site survery.

In other words, I want just the battery and a way to connect to it
without use of the car.

There, that should be a little clearer. Sorry.

Find one that runs on ~12v (probably that'd be most of 'em), and power it
directly. You can buy cigarette lighter DC supplies very cheaply. No need
to convert your auto's 12v to 110v, then use an AC adapter (wall wart) to
convert it back to 12v.

That's a little easier. A car battery puts out 12v. A car's electrical
system runs at about 13.8 volts, and has occasional spikes and surges. So
a 12v AP can be powered directly, without concern for power regulation or
conditioning.

Find an AP that runs on 12v, and wire it (with an inline fuse) directly to
the battery. Use of an inverter in this case would be terribly wasteful,
both in battery life and cost.

Skyler,
Not trying to be offensive here, but if you can't figure out how to
connect a couple of wires from a battery to an inverter or DC-powered
AP, are you sure you're in the right business?

To answer your question, the inverter will have a cigarette lighter
plug on the end of a cable. The center conductor will be the "+" or
positive wire. Connect that to the "+" terminal on the car battery.

The other wire goes to the "-" terminal on the battery.

You can either cut off the plug and wire directly or you can go down
to the local auto parts store and buy a female lighter jack and wire
it to the battery, then plug in the inverter when ready for use.
