HI There,

I am trying to connect to my windows network without any luck, I have
installed a new network card which I have tested sucessfully on other
servers on our network and the card worked fine. I have much the same
configuration as some of the other machines such as service packs etc. I am
able to ping other machines on the network successfully, but when I try to
access through network neighbourhood or by searching for a computer by
hostname no other machines can be found.

I have also tried downloading the driver from the manufacturer as well as
trying a different brand of card, but with the same errors, I have tried to
give the machine a static ip as well as a dynamic assigned ip from the
router

My machine configuration is as follows:

OS: WIN2K advance server
Service pack: 4.0
card type: 10/100
Manfacturer: Netway

Could someone tell me if there is any other checks I can make on the server,
I have checked just about everything I can think of.

Thanks in advance for your answer

Sean

Are you running NetBIOS or native IP? the other systems?
Is AD installed somewhere?
What is your primary DNS settings? Does it point to a DNS server running
AD?

HI Roland,

I am running TCP/IP, the dns settings point to a router to which we have a
adsl account. The thing is that I have placed the card into other machines
on our network and it worked straight away. I know it has to be something to
do with the config on my machine, I just dont know what to check.

If you're using AD, then your server should be supplying the DHCP and DNS.
Your router will know nothing of AD. Does the router even supply DNS via
DHCP?

Hi Roland,

I am not sure what you mean by AD, yes the router does supply the DNS via
DHCP. I have tried a static ip & dynamic ip on the machine. I am able to
ping the other machines on our network by ip but not by host name, I can
also access the machines by HTTP using the ip address of that particular
machine.

AD = Active Directory

If you can see a computer by IP, then you have connectivity. If you cannot
see the same computer by name, then you have a DNS issue. If you're running
AD, your router will not have any information to supply to the workstations
because it is not AD aware.

I have to take the dog to the Dr. When I return, I'll be able to respond to
more.
