There's no inherent problem in networking 98SE with XP. All versions
of Windows can network with each other. I don't agree with your
expert that it's necessary to take out the old drive and place it
along side the new one. Someone who charges £1.50 per minute should
be able to get the network to work.
By default, XP doesn't allow networked access to the Program Files and
Windows folders and to individual users' folders within Documents and
Settings. It allows access to all other disks and folders.
You can remove those sharing restrictions by disabling simple file
sharing on XP. Even with those restrictions, you can share subfolders
within those folders, e.g. you can share "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express" or "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Favorites" and access
that folder from another computer on the network.
The easiest way to get 98 and XP networked is to run XP's Network
Setup Wizard on both computers. You can run the Wizard on 98 by
inserting the XP CD-ROM. You can copy the Wizard from XP to a CD-ROM
or a thumb drive -- it's in the file C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe.
