98SE will not connect to internet via Netgear

I have a BPL (Cable-type) modem going into a Netgear WGR614.V4 router.
The primary machine on the network is an XP Pro desktop (wired), and
it works great both on the LAN and on the Internet.

The secondary machine on the network is a 98SE laptop with a Linksys
card (wired). Both machines share files fine, can be seen on the
network, etc. However, the laptop can not access the internet. I
have tried specifying the same settings as the primary, tried letting
the router make the settings, tried various gateway/DNS combinations,
but get no internet access at all. I have even tried a wireless card
(MS) but took it back.

Any suggestions?

Nope, all the filters are disabled for just that reason.

most often the cable modem will bind the internet access to the mac adress
of the first nic it conects to. try disconecting the other computers and
then unpluging the power fromthe cable modem. allow it to reboot with
nothing but the router conected to it, then use the dhcp option in the
router to give ip adresses to the computers.
