Hi folks. My dad is thinking about getting broadband installed,
but I notice, that many of the ISPs state 98SE as the minimum
requirement, as does the Voyager105 CD, which I presume is the
freebie supplied by most isps. His PC is old, P3 450Mhz 128Mb
RAM, and runs the original version of 98 (fully patched). Is he
going to have to upgrade his OS? I notice though, that Tiscali
doesn't require 98SE, but I've advised him not to take this
route! what's the score with 98?

Thanks, Alex.

If you get a cheap ADSL mode, or a USB-connected router, then some
resources will be consumed in the PC (memory, and mainly CPU time).

If he gets an ethernet router and a cheap (5 quid) ethernet card, most
of the work will be done in the router.

I use a PII and a router (although not with Windows). No problems at
all.

The minimum probably relates to the idea of connecting using a USB modem
which requires a minimum of W98SE. If you use a network card and
router/modem, anything that will support TCP/IP will be OK - Win 95 and
probably Win 3.11 would be OK!

Some ISP's give free modems - these tend to be USB modems.

Win98SE was probably the 1st version of Windows to properly support USB.

It may work with earlier versions of Windows (Win98 or some versions of
Win95) but its not guaranteed.

However, if you are planning to connect via a router and a network card -
the OS doesn't matter.

You may also want to read somewhere like http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ before
you decide on an ADSL ISP - personally I woudn't choose Tiscali...

Sunil

My mums pc runs win98 via a router, works fine. The installation of the
network card was a bit tricky and win98 was a bit picky, but it still works
with missing driver files.

Apart from the items mentioned already by others there are serious security
issues with early Windows versions that leave the machine wide open to
attack. As for Tiscali forget them as an ISP. Quite apart from their
generally poor reputation they don't support migration to another ISP.

Personally I'd just dump 98 and install windows 2000 instead. Will
run on that machine just fine - plus its not as buggy.

USB ADSL Modem. Use a network card connecting to an ADSL Modem router
instead and you could use DOS.

Another thing to think about is M$ have withdrawn all support for 98,
so no updates or security fixes

scan do an alcatel speedtouch internal PCI modem. Very easy to install.
The only problem I had was a BSOD - very frustrating when you're dying
to see your shiny new connection. I did a google search and found it to
be a conflict with sygate personal firewall. I have now changed to
ZoneAlarm and all is fine
