My main pc runs xp sp2 and linked to this is a sweex adsl router, my second
pc is a 98se one that go's on the internet without any problems, however my
third pc also runs 98se and after running the netsetup floppy from the xp
machine does not give the default gateway, all other settings appear to be as
the second machine, I tried a sweex pci lan card initially on 3rd pc but
after being unable to get to work I changed this for a vivanco usb connector
both with the same result(no default gateway, thus not being able to get on
the internet)
Any help would be appreciated.

when you say "does not give the default gateway" does this mean that you
cant ping the router?
Can the problem machine access the internet when connected directly to the
modem - ie without going through the router?
I had similar problems when setting up my home net with a Linksys wrt54gs
router, once I had got the conection to the internet through the modem I was
able to connect via the router.

Have you checked the router configuration so that the problem machines IP is
in the correct IP range?

I also found that I could not access the Linksys setup screen if I had "Use
a proxy server for your LAN" set in IE. Try unsetting this if it is set. (IE
/ Tools / Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings and uncheck. This
probably isnt the solution but its all I could think of.

when I run winipcfg the following are given.
HOST NAME OK
DNS SERVERS OK
NODE TYPE BROADCAST
ADAPTER ADDRESS OK
IP ADDRESS OK
SUBNET MASK OK
DEFAULT GATEWAY IS BLANK
DHCP SERVER OK
LEASE DATE IS GIVEN
EXPIRY DATE IS GIVEN

where I typed OK this means that I am satisfied with the numbers given, also
I can ping the router and this pc itself. The Sweex adsl router is the
broadband modem, should I try connecting via my dial up modem to ensure the
IE settings work although this pc has been on the internet before.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try connecting via dialup to test internet connection. My ISP
requires a different account for dialup than for broadband - so that
wouldn't work for me.

If the router is also the modem then I'm assuming that it was supplied by
your ISP. Have you contacted support?

I dont think I can be help more than that Im affraid. Hopefully someone else
will pick this up who has first hand experiance with that router model.
good luck,

Keith

Thanks Keith for trying to help.
At the moment the 98se problem pc sees itself on the network, sees the other
98se pc but it is not accessable, pings itself and pings the router address.
Entire network comes up with Mshome which is good, but still cannot see the
xp pc or the internet.

Any further help please as this is doing my head in.
Thanks
Chas
