98se lags when xp access shared resources

I have 98se machines as well as xp machines. Shared
resources our on the 98 computer. When a 98 computer
access the shared resources everything is fine. When an
xp computer access the shared resources on the 98 machine
the 98 machine starts to lag, Why?
