I am having trouble setting up a home network between my 98se desktop and my
xp home laptop. I have internet access thru my linksys wireless router, but I
can't seem to set up a network connection between the two.

My 98se desktop can see the xp home laptop but does not have access. My xp
home laptop can't see my 98 se desktop at all. Is this done thru tcp/ip or
another service. I must be missing a step.

Thanks

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. If it finds the
router's shared Internet connection, tell it to use that connection.
Otherwise, tell it that the computers connect to the Internet through
a residential gateway. The Wizard will make all the right settings
for file and printer sharing.

If the computers have a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PCCillin, etc), configure it to allow access on the local area
network.

Remove any other network protocols (IPX/SPX, NetBEUI) from both
computers.

Thanks, I will try that.
Along those lines what would be your suggestion for an xp setup wizzard
disk. The laptop is a Dell and they do not ship an xp disk anymore with new
computers. Also it does not have a floppy drive... I guess I could try to
borrow someones xp setup disk.

Thanks again

You're welcome. You can copy the Wizard's executable file to a CD or
USB flash drive on XP and run it on 98se:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

is on the laptop?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your question. Please give more
details of your setup, including what you mean by "host computer".
What do you mean by "this will also work"?

O.K. Steve.

I had read the post by "Rick" whose home network used a 98se desktop and an
XP laptop. I have the reverse...a Gateway desktop XP and a Dell 98se laptop.
I can get on the internet with both, using a D-Link router that is wired to
the XP desktop. However, I can't seem to get it right to share the printers
connected to the desktop or to shae files.

I was simply asking if your advice to "Rick" Would also work with my
configuration. I'll try it and see, unless you advise otherwise.

XP's Network Setup Wizard can configure all Windows 98 and XP
computers for Internet access and file/printer sharing. It makes no
difference whether they're laptops or desktops.

If the Wizard detects the router's shared Internet connection, tell it
to use that connection. Otherwise, tell it that the computer connects
to the Internet through a residential gateway.

Make sure that any firewall programs are configured to allow
file/printer sharing on the local area network.

Steve,

I'm going to try to do this same thing (connect Win98 computers on a LAN
with XP computers, using WorkGroups and Autologon)

I've done this before and believe I had problems with usernames - If they're
all the same it is much easier.

I don't know how to set a network username on Win98 with AutoLogin.

Do you?

Thanks and excuse me for jumping in

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by "Autologon" and
"AutoLogin". Please explain.

You're welcome. In general, I think it's better to start a new
message thread, with a new and descriptive subject, when your question
doesn't refer to the previous one. For example, your question could
be titled "Win98 and Autologon".
