As Kurt said, a W98 client cannot join a domain and never could. Joining
a domain esablishes a secure communication channel between client and
server, and only NT, W2k or later clients can do that. When W98 came out the
Windows server OS in use was NT, which used Netbios special names to find a
DC. The logon using an NT domain controller is pretty much as Kurt
described, as I recall, and W2k/W2k3 will work like that for a W98 client..
