Hello
I have a 98 laptop that I have added to a workgroup that consists of W2K(pro)/and XP boxes. I have network connectivity. On the 98 when I go into Network Neighborhood the other computers in the workgroup show up ok but when I click on one to get to the shares I keep getting a window asking for a password and am unable to access the shares on the XP boxes. On the other hand from the XP boxes when I go into My Network Places/View Workgroup Computers the 98 shows up and I can get to it's shares with no password prompt. I need to somehow be able to access the shares on the XP's from the 98. Any ideas

Thanks

Jo

On the Windows 2K and XP boxes you'll need to create a user with the same
name (and password, if one is used) that you use to log onto the Windows 98
computer, or you'll need to log onto the Windows 98 computer with a username
and password that exists on the Windows 2K and XP boxes.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP computers to fully enable file
sharing:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm

If you've explicitly assigned a password to the XP Guest account,
enter that password at the prompt.

If the XP machines run XP Professional and you've explicitly disabled
simple file sharing, see this site:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing

I have also been struggling with this problem for several weeks and no
matter what I did I still was asked for a password from the W98 machine even
though the XP machines were fine and they saw the 98 machine (I am
networking 2 XPProfessional and 1 W98 machines). However, I have at last
resolved it - I had two accounts on each of my XP machines, and obviously
their account names were different, BUT their passwords were the same (yes
my wife and I used the same passwords for each of out accounts). I tried to
think of why XP was unsure of MY account name and password that I had
replicated on the W98 machine and decided that maybe it didn't like the fact
that the password was the same for two accounts on the XP machines. I was
right - on changing MY password on both the XP machines and the 98 machine
suddenly all was well and I am seeing files between all machines!

I hope this may help your problem - regards, Rob
