98 Network File Sharing

I am having trouble sharing files. I can see all of the
shared folders and the files in them just fine, but when I
try to transfer a file, it either hangs and then errors
that it the network source is no longer available, or it
locks up. My print sharing is working fine. I just have
two computers both running 98 and I am using a 4 port
hub/router connected to a DSL modem. I am able to surf
the internet on both computers. I have TCP/IP, IPX/SPX,
and Netbui all loaded. I can sometime actually get the
second computer to copy files from the first computer, but
the first computer only sees the folders and files, but
won't copy them. Anyone got any ideas...

A key to Windows networking is to use the same, single network
protocol on all computers. Using more than one protocol can make a
network unreliable. Choose one protocol and remove the other two from
both computers. TCP/IP is needed for Internet access, so it's the
best choice. Remove NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.

It might help to download and install the latest driver programs for
each network card.

I worked most of the day today on this problem. I ended up
putting new NIC cards in each computer, and tried swapping
cables around. I loaded all the new virus software and
scanned both, but nothing found. The old NIC cards were
10M and these are both 10/100 cards. I seem to need to
use netbeui because one of the old DOS based programs
still uses that. The software doesn't seem to want to run
without that loaded. I can now transfer files sometimes,
but it is running REALLY SLOW.. It took almost 5 minutes
to transfer a 10meg file from one computer to another. I
have done all of the windows updates from Win98 update on
the web. Both computers are the same now. This is
getting too weird. I have another network with Win98,
2000, and XP, and I don't have this much trouble.

At his NIC's end....

allow file sharing ONLY on netbeui (since you need it)

disable on tci/ip and make netbeui the default protocol..
