Hey there guys, I've asked a few questions here before and had excellent
results, so here I go again...

I've had a network with 2 XP SP2 computers for a while now, and everything
is great, Internet-file sharing all work great.

A friend of mine has a computer in the back room, and he's never upgraded
from Win98, the first edition. I had an extra network card, a NetGear FA311,
and we installed it and connected his machine to the router.

Nothing I've tried is working. Although I can for some reason see his
computer in the workgroup, I can't access it and his can't see or access
either of these computers or the internet.

I've checked probably 20-30 sites for info on 98 networking to XP and
everyone says configuring through a LAN is fine and easy.

I really am at my wits end with this, I've been fiddling all day and this
room is 101 degrees hot now. :P I'd appreciate any guidance on setting up
the network on the 98 side, how the Network settings window should appear and
with what things in the window.

Thanks a lot, look forward to some much-needed help!

You need to check basic connectivity first and describe the ip
addressing scheme you are using. Is the router issuing private ip
addresses to all the computers? Can PC1 ping (and be pinged by) PC2
and the router using ip numbers?
Can you ping 4.2.2.1 and get a response?

Along with this information post a routing table for the 98box and one
of the xp boxes which work correctly for comparison.
To get the routing table into a text file type
"route print > temp.txt" and the paste the contents of temp.txt here

Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. I have work till this afternoon, and will
try the pings then, and reply back.

I checked pings and I could ping my 2nd xp computer from the primary xp
computer, but not vice-versa, which is odd. The 3rd computer (98 fe) isn't
seen by either on the network, and still doesn't have internet connectivity.

I think this ordeal has thrown off my general network settings, as I can no
longer share files from either of the 2 xp computers. Ug!

Both xp comp's can, 98 fe can't with error code: 10043.

One way pings usually comes down to firewall configuration.

Jim.
