As anybody seen the following...

I have migrated a NT4 domain to Windows 2003, and transfered the DHCP.
There is 3 VLAN, and the switch as been set to forward DHCP request to
the new servers (The Switch is a Nortel Passport).

I now have the challenge that the win98 station cannot find a DHCP
server as sson as it is the 2003 DHCP tht are active, but no trouble
for if it is the NT4 (i.e. they get network configuration, are able to
connect to the 2003 server, surf the net, etc.).

I have not yet tried to put a 98 on the server segment (I JUST thought
about it <smile>) so I am wondering if there is something else that I
should look into to find resolve the challenge!

Thank you for any pointers!

Serge

Switches aren't Routers, unless you spent $$$$$$$ for one of those
combination devices they call Layer3 Switches. Ours was about $10,000 after
adding all the copper & fiber modules and redundant power supplies. I don't
know anything about Nortel equipment.

1. Where ever the Router is, double check the Router's DHCP Forwarding
settings to make sure you didn't mistype something. Make sure the DHCP
Server didn't end up in the wrong subnet by accidentally plugging it into
the wrong switch port that was associated with the wrong VLAN. I've had that
happen once or twice.

2. In the past I have had Win98 machines that just flat wouldn't work with
DHCP properly no matter what I did. However they did work after reinstalling
them from scratch. Win98 tends to get the TCP/IP Stack screwed up somehow
for no reason. Try using the Win98 box(es) with static network settings
first to verify that connectivity and networkability functions with the 2003
Domain to begin with. Once you know everything works, then retry DHCP.

You also should leave the old DHCP completely powered off when you retry the
Win98 on DHCP because, if I'm not mistaken, Win98 caches the last known DHCP
Server's name or IP# and will keep trying to go to the same one (but I could
be wrong about that).

Is a layer3 switch pasport 1200 or 8600
Was this in place before the migration to 2003
Are the 98 machines that get addresses from the NT4 on a different VLAN

If the answers to the above are yes you might want to check where the DHC
requests are being forwarded to... the L3 switch might be configured to forwar
them to a specfic IP address (the NT4 server) this is a good thing as it convert
what would be a broadcast to a unicast on the server segment. However it i
often easier in the long term to forward it as a broadcast to avoid issues like yours
Is your 2003 server using the same IP address as your old NT4... if not try it on that address

Get your sniffer out look for the DHCP request leaving the 98 machine
Does a response come back
If no put your sniffer on the server segment can you see the DHCP request fro
the 98 machine on that segment? If yes you know the router/L3 switch has forwarded it :
Where has it been forwarded to unicast or broadcast...
Can you see a response from the DHCP server

etc etc.... good luck
