900+ repeater

Hello

I am thinking of using a Dlink 900+ in repeater mode to get around an
awkward area of my house where the signal from my Orinoco AP200 (using
Orinoco clients and WEP+) does not reach.

Is it true that since the Dlink is simply repeating, it does not have to
know anything about the WEP+ packets? Is it simply forwarding packets
using the MAC addresses? Or are the MAC addresses hidden in the encryption
too?

Thanks,
N

In repeating mode it doesn't have to know anything other than the MAC
address of the AP it is repeating.

I just go to the "mode" page .... click on "site survey" and then cut
and paste the MAC of the target device into the block marked "Remote AP
MAC" ... then check "repeater" and "apply" and you are in business. (if
you don't see the device you want to repeat in the site survey listing
then you won't be repeating it).

If the AP you are repeating is using a MAC filter ... don't forget to
add the MAC of the repeater to the allowed list (otherwise the repeater
will show up in Stumbler/Site Survey like everything is fine but you
won't be able to get it to work).

I always felt that the following article did a pretty good job of
explaining how to set up a 900AP+ as a repeater.

IMHO as always ...

From recent experience and research, many repeating APs will only repeat for APs
from the same manufacturer. I bought an USR2249 to repeat for a Pheenet ADSL
Wireless Router and it didn't work either as a repeater or a as a client. If
you read the specs of any repeating AP they all claim to repeat for products
from the same manufacturer only. A search of Google will show several instances
of others finding the same with various APs.

I have used the DWL-900+AP as a client to many different AP's, including
other manufacturers...
