802.1x EAP type setting changes for no reason

Hi,
we have installed an EAP client (actually the SecureW2 EAP client) for
our *wired* network.
My problem is that if the switch name changes (e.g. the computer is
connected to some other switch for whatever reason) the dialog in
Network Connections/Local Area Connection/Authentication reverts back
to the (apparently default) "Smart Card or other Certificate" setting.
I found out that if I put every possible switch name into keys at
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/EAPOL/Parameters/Interfaces/<my_localareaconnection_guid>/<some_number>
then it won't fall back, if it finds the switch name in there.
I could obviously put every possibility in there, but that is very
unflexible.
What can I do about this behavior of Windows? I want something else
than "Smart Card or other Certificate" to be the default. We don't have
an Active Directory so I'd be happy if someone could point out the
necessary registry settings.
Regards,
~jm
