Hello,

I am in market to buy wireless router for sharing high speed internet
(Comcast Cable modem). I need some tips.

Should i go for 802.1g(54Mbps ) or 802.1b(11 Mbps)? If I go for 802.1g
, which cost 50-100$ more , will I be able to use the available
bandwidth. I mean, Do I get 54mbps from my cable modem? If not then
does it make sense to go for 802.1g routers?

How do i measure the actual mbps I am getting from cable modem and
then between my router and my wirelessly connected computer?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Connect two machines on a hub (one of which connects over WiFi) and do some
FTP transfers between them. In my tests 802.11b saturates at about 4Mb/s.

What is the typical throughput of the cable, 1.5mbps? That's slower
than the typical throughput of 802.11b with WEP enabled: ~4 to 5mbps.
However, if you have another pc that you might want to copy large
files or backup to then yes the 802.11g would be better.
