Isn't 802.11g range rather good. Last week I finally got a 802.11g
Modem/Router free from my ISP having previously used a 802.11b WAP.

With my old 802.11b WAP and a CF WiFi card > PCMCIA Adapter I could go down
one flight of stairs before the signal dropped off or using it in my mates
flat directly above mine I could recieve a weak signal in some parts of his
flat but it would drop off in others.

With this 802.11g Router and inbuilt 802.11g Intel 3945ABG centrino wireless
I can go down 2 floors and sit on the bottom step outside the flats and
recieve a 0.5mbit download speed or wander outside and sit in the public
area for residents and recieve a 1.1mbit downstream reception.

This area is 2 floors below my flat and outside the window and outside wall
of the room where the router is and about 10 metres away on the ground floor
and I recieve a better signal then when 2 floors below inside the building
going through all those walls.

I can even pickup 6 other wireless networks on my estate one of them is
coming from a block of flats that is about 25 metres away through 2 outside
walls and free air.

I had my doubts that the kind of 802.11b equipment I used would be usefull
in a 2 or 3 floor house but this 802.11g stuff seems to cover a lot further
distance.

I will be able to sit in the public area of my flats in the summer and surf
the net / listen to streaming music now... what fun!

I thought everything was great untill I tried to stream some mp3 whilst
sitting on the bottom step it kept rebuffering.. even when I climbed a few
flights of stairs the same thing. Its strange becuase I can connect to
another unsecured router of the same model (one of my neighbours) and it
shows the same signal strength ie 1 green bar and when I tried to stream the
mp3 off http://www.di.fm it was fine. I guess maybe its doing this becuase
sitting on that step I am at the far reaches of where my wifi signal will
travel I know if I get off the bottom step and walk through the door I
cannot see any wireless networks.

Hi
If you are using Windows Zero configuration to manage your Wireless every
time you are tempted to look at some one else's connection it is registering
it into the preferred list. Remove all the connection that are not your from
the preferred list.
