I have always found that USB NICs tend to be flaky. I'd suggest the D-link
DWL-G520, remove the antenna, and replace it with an SMC omni- or
directional-antenna. The NIC comes with an additional low-profile bracket
and, if you hunt around, you can also install 3rd party drivers for it for
added features not included in the D-link set. You can find the card for
~$45 and the SMC antenna for another ~$30.
