I'm thinking of uprating my ...11b to ...11g using a cheap USB dongle.
What kind of range should I expect?

Crap (I'm biased against USB dongles as I've yet to see a decent one)
but about 40% better than the 11b.

exactly the same, there is no difference in the range of 11b and 11g
as the frequency and coding methods at extreme range are identical.

Got the dongle (Belkin F5D7050) but cannot get the network to work! I
can get ping either of the machines (I have a desktop and laptop in a
peer to peer setup with the desktop always connected to the net) from
each other but I cannot get a network connection between the two...now I
had a similar setting working a little while ago with a Belkin 11b USB
adaptor and I sort of assumed it would work the same but no, it's been
bugging me all afternoon...

I'm using the Belkin Wireless Config. software on the desktop and WZC on
the laptop. I've tried using WZC on both and it made no
difference...can any one suggest a route through this?

Make sure your firewall is set to allow File and Printer Sharing. All
firewalls, including Windows XP SP2 firewall, have file and printer
sharing blocked by default.
