I have the older Microsoft wireless 802.11b networking
base station and adapters for my home... I'm starting to
consider a Media Station network for sharing music and
video files... do I need to upgrade this network to
802.11g and if yes do I need to replace all my current
gear our can the firmware be updated?

Using 802.11g (at least) is the best way to go. Normally, you cannot
upgrade just the firmware to enable the faster transmission, but need to
replace the devices themselves.
