I've recently learned (old news to the people here I'm sure) that WEP
encryption on 802.11b networks sucks and may be worthless.

What, if anything, can be done to shore up the security on this kind
of network until something better comes along?

Yep. WEP sucks. It can be cracked in literally seconds by commonly
available tools.

Better is available today. Most current wi-fi hardware supports WPA
or WPA2 encryption. With a long and messy pass phrase, it's currently
uncrackable. Some vendors of 802.11b only hardware have add WPA
support in firmware and driver updates so it's worth checking the
vendor web pile. Otherwise, just buy some shiney new hardware and be
done with it.
