Hello all,

A lot of the articles I've read concerning wireless signal boosting focus on
actually boosting the transmit power - by using bigger, better antennas or
by installing a signal booster kit.

That's fine - if you want to boost transmission; but what if you want to
boost *reception* ??? I.E. In circumstances where it isn't possible (for
whatever reason) to increase the transmit power?

I'm using a Reliawave 802.11b 200mW High Power Wireless PC Card (details:
http://www.demarctech.com/products/r...-200mw-prism2-
5-pcmcia-card.html) and would like to know how to increase it's reception.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your input.

Regards,

Richard.

All the antenna suggestions for boosting transmit power increase
recieve sensitivity too.
Does it have an external antenna socket?

It does indeed.

According to the spec, Two RP-MMCX (Male) connectors.

Does this help?

Sure.
You can attach any directional antenna, from a pringles can one all
the way up to a several meter dish.

This will greatly improve range.

OK,

Thanks for all contributions thus far.

All that in mind, I've decided to get:

1 x "Pacific Wireless 5.5 dB Magnetic MMCX" from www.fab-corp.com which is a
magnetic mount aerial for $16.00 (if you goto the site, down the left-hand
side choose "Shop Pac Wireless" and it's about 2/3 of the way down the
page).

1 x "ReliawaveT 802.11b 200mW High Power Wireless PC Card " from
http://www.demarctech.com/products/r...-200mw-prism2-
5-pcmcia-card.html

What are your opinions on this, group? Good/Bad? Better alternatives? What
about range? Miles better?!

Many thanks once again.

Regards,

Richard.

Running a Wireless G system...main computer in my "computer" room plus a
second desktop in the basement plus two laptops... everything is
Linksys in all the computers

I run a laptop in my wood shop that is 175 feet from my home... and I
could connect with a POOR signal that really was not stable from outside
the shop....would not connect at all inside the building... !

Yesterday I drove over to Radio shack and picked up a pair of 5dB ant
(purchased 30 bucks for the pair) ...BUT they did allow me to connect
inside the building ..again with a poor connection... but one that did
not fail in the hour I played with it...

Then I ran over to Best Buy and purchased a Wireless "B" booster...(
double ouch...99 bucks... But when I hooked it up walked down to the
shop I am now getting "GOOD" signal from anywhere within that
building... which is loaded with metal woodworking equipment... signal
is or was stable all last evening...

There are a couple of trees and plenty of 4-5 foot pampas grass bushes
in the line of sight from the wireless access point to the shop building
but as of this morning I am extremely happy to get this thing
working...not so happy about spending 130 bucks..but honestly that is
cheap for what this connection means to me...

http://www.freeantennas.com

Just build a reflector. Works with any frequency (900, 2.4, 5.8)
provides plenty gain and costs you nothing.
