Hello

I'm renting for 6 months, then I will probably
leave the UK (I'm not english).

But I need broadband.

It seems than any provider wants a one year contract.
What can I do?

In the apartment there is a phone line, but it is not yet
on my name.
Advice?

Thank you very much indeed.

Alex.

Do you definitely need broadband, will dial up suffice?

Zen will offer you a 1-month contract that you could continue for 6 months,
then cancel

I have the same situation and find broadband impossible for a short period
of time - unless you are willing to pay the set-up charge and accept that
fact that you can't have broadband for a couple of weeks while they 'set it
up'

I use fast4 (www.fast4.net) at £7.99pm for genuine unlimited dial-up and no
problems over the past 5 or more years - except they cancel the contract the
day you notify them even if you have paid until the end of the month. So
cancel on the last day of use.

I used Fast4 dial up a few years ago, they changed the T&C's without notification so they
could charge an extra months fees as notice when I left and also tried to charge me yet again
for a second month after I'd left. Connecting to their dial-up service in the evening was
often near impossible.

They also spammed me earlier this year using personal details obtained from their former
V21 customer database after V21 + database was sold to Biscit. All in all the crappiest
ISP I've ever had the stupidity to use.

There's a £85 termination fee with Fast4's broadband service so give that a miss too.

Could the problem be that BT will insist on a min 12 month contract?

look at the other half of the broadband ISPs that don't have 12 month
contracts.

zen
ukfsn
newnet
idnet
plusnet

etc

The phone line may be more of an issue :-

"4. A minimum term of 12 months applies.

>From 1st May 2007, for customers ending their service early, we will

replace the existing charges with a policy that requires customers who
have ordered a line on or after 1st May to pay the outstanding line
rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a
maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). Customers moving home and transferring BT
service to their new address will be subject to a new minimum term
from the date of start of service at the new address."

so you may have to pay about £63 exit fee to BT, although if you don't
intended to come back I doubt you'll be extradited :-)

IIRC you can get out of this after 3 months or so?
