56K dial up as back up

I have ADSL and wish to install 56K dial up modem back up.

I have been told by the PC Manufacturer Medion that 56K dial up is
incompatible with ADSL and won't work - is this correct?

I have tried installing connections to 2 different ISP's and get an engaged
tone each time.

If I dial the same number I get a computer/modem answer.

I have the PC's modem connected to a telephone socket in a BT Digital Access
ISDN socket, whilst the ADSL comes through a wireless router connected to a
different phone line.

It has worked for me, when I made the switch from ISDN to ADSL I found
I had to dial in to do something to the settings. I connected my dusted
off old Courier via a filter to the ADSL line and it was fine. Just
treat it as if it is a 'phone on an ADSL line. The same principle must
apply to ISDN - plug it into a POTS socket.

I have and it dials up but gets an engaged tone. When I dial the same number
I get an answer from a computer.

No - it is totally incorrect. Mine is simply plugged in to a normal phone
socket when I need to use dial up.

I have no idea why that may be, but I have no problems dialling other ISPs
even when ADSL is still conected. The second (dial up conection) takes
precedence over ADSL while it is still in operation.

I have no idea about ISDN connections, never having used that system, but
if you dial up using the different phone line ADSL is on, there should be
no problems. The worst that might happen is the 56k conection speed may
drop a bit from a non ADSL line - mine used to be 48k before ADSL but now
is about 45k after.

i also use dial-up as a backup

sounds like you have just entered the wrong phone #.
you need to check with your ISP

Are you sure your modem is dialling the right number, and no dialling prefix
has been accidentally selected?

What happens if you plug the modem into your ADSL line?
(via the telephone port of a filter of course)

As long as its plugged in to the telephone part of the filter It should work

If your connecting to the ISDN line of your BT socket you require an ISDN
modem and its drivers installed

If however your connecting to a seperate std line there should be no
problem.
I have had both Cable/ISDN/StdTel connections all functioning correctly on
the same pc

Is it actually a BT engaged tone? That sounds as if the modem is simply
dialling the wrong number. Given that it affects more than one ISP, it's
probably a systematic error such as a dialling prefix. I've found that it's
best to turn off Use Dialling Rules and to enter both the code and the
number in the Phone Number field, leaving the Area Code field blank.

>> If I dial the same number I get a computer/modem answer.

This is dialling using a phone? Which line is the phone connected to - that
same one that the dial-up modem is connected to? Or the ADSL/voice line?

If it's on a different phone line (not one that's got ADSL activated on it)
then I don't see how the PC manufacturer can say that ADSL and dial-up are
incompatible. Before you got broadband, did you still use the same ISDN
line: has anything changed on that line or with the dial-up config on the
computer.

Hang on. Is the modem a dial-up voice modem or an ISDN TA (terminal
adaptor - the ISDN equivalent of a modem)? I'm getting confused now.

If it's an ordinary dial-up modem that uses voice frequencies over an
ordinary phone line, then would it work on an ISDN line?

so it isn't even on the line with ADSL ? forget about
incompatibilities then.

Not sure why you aren't using ISDN rather than 56k, but 56k should
work over the analogue port of a Home highway installation. Some
modems don't like the very short run to the "exchange" which in this
case is the Highway box.

Does the 56k modem get an engaged tone ? or is it a windows error
message that leads you to believe its engaged - better to quote the
error message unless you have listened in with a phone and know its
engaged. Sometimes the helpful dial code settings in windows make a
mess of the number it actually dials.
