I am in the market for a wireless 54G adsl modem/router and am looking at
the

Netgear DG834G (£115)
Belkin 7630 (£107)
Linksys WAG54G (£87)

If anyone has any idea's/recommendations on which to choose and why I'd be
grateful.

The modem/router will be connected to 2 Belkin 54G PCI cards - is there any
advantage of choosing a Belkin modem/router as well? (i.e. anything I can do
with that combination that I can't do if I use a different make?)

Also, I believe the Netgear DG834G says that it will support ADSL 2 after a
firmware upgrade is released - does anyone know if the other makes will also
support that?

And of course, if there are any other makes I should consider... (yes, I
know the Vigor 2600G looks very nice but its also a lot more expensive!)

Regards
Sunil

I've just changed over from a Belkin usb "b", and a Dlink on the laptop via
ICS with speedtouch to a Vigour2600G, a Draytek "g" laptop card, and a Dlink
GWL 520G pci card.
It worked first time.

However, I noticed on the pci card a setting for "Xtreme G" which is faster
(probably on the lines of Us Robotic's Turbo mode), but I assumeall the kit
would have to Dlink.

There's also an "Xpress" mode on the Belkin 54g pci card. Probably the same
deal.

You have been around here long enough to know Netgear is potential trouble,
you get no support and the firmware upgrades cause more trouble then you
started with.
I know the Draytek seems expensive, but after struggling with Netgear kit
for a week, it's well worth it !
Belkin also gets fair share of complaints.
Regards,
Martin

Dunno about Netgear being potential trouble but I have only been
around here for a week or 2 and have seen this question asked at least
5 times.
When I bought my wireless router I sat and read through this group,
took note of what others suggested and then completely ignored
everyone and made my purchase...couldn't be happier with it either.

Do people not read the groups before asking anymore?

As Martin says, I have been here for a very long time (in the uk groups at
least) - so yes, I have read all the other posts, done the google groups
thing and posted anyway.

If only as the other questions I asked (Re ADSL 2 and using different makes
with Belkin 54G cards = functionallity diferences or not) have never been
answered or at least not to my satisfaction

I am fully aware that some people, like Martin have had problems with
certain Netgear models and Netgear appear to have a habit (with the DG814
for instance) of having to release quite a few firmware versions before
"fixing" the problems and there have been a lot fewer comments about the
DG834G after the 1.03 firmware was released (though its still not perfect)

Also, the Belkin also has had quite a few problems when launched - however,
after they released their firmware update - it seems to have fixed
most/all(?) of the problems - at least virtually everyone has stopped
commenting on it.

Finally, the Linksys WAG54G is very new - I have seen virtually no comments
on it and I don't think you can even buy it in the US...

I suppose there is also the USR 9106 model but there is very little
discussion on that nodel as well.

The Draytek does sem very nice and is often recommended but is also 60/70%
more expensive

Hence, I would appreciate comments from anyone running uptto date firmware
on these devices.

Regards
Sunil

I was in the same position as you last week. I am getting switched on
tomorrow hopefully, and initally was choosing between the NetGear and
the Linksys. After doing a bit of research I found that a lot of users
were having problems with these so I went for the US Robotics 9106. I
know that plenty of users don't have ANY problems with Netgear or
Linksys wireless routers, but I found that there were plenty who WERE.

I would skip all 3 and go for a USR 8054. lousy software, lousy helpdesk
but great performance signalwise.

Thanks but that model doesn't contain a built in ADSL modem - if I went with
USR, it would have to be the USR 9106 - a model which is relatively new and
there has not been much feedback on.

Sunil

I set one of these up for my sister about a month ago, since when it has
worked unattended (she lives in a different town) with one cabled computer
and one wireless laptop. Setup was very easy. There is a utility disk
supplied, but you can ignore it because everything can be done via a normal
web browser (or telnet if you're a masochist). My only criticism is that the
unit takes slightly more electrical power (about 17W) than I would be really
happy about for something that is to be left switched on all the time, and
consequently gets rather warm, but it works well. If it's switched off, it
locks up again in about 30 seconds, indicating this with front pamnel
lights.

"Buy it cheap, buy it twice", as they say. You may be able to find something
cheaper than a Draytek that does everything you need, but I would recommend
that at least you go for a reputable manufacturer who provide backup, and
who are mentioned in a positive light in newsgroups such as this one. The
best advice you will get about the reliability of a piece of technology is
from other people who have already bought one and are using it. Buy the
right unit for the job and the only thing you'll need to do to it is brush
the dust off it every couple of years.

Rod.

No opinion on Draytek but a huge amen to the Netgear comment.
