If so, are the new models that are in stores complient with the new
standards?--or are they still draft units that are waiting to be sold?
If setting up a home network now, which standard would you go with?

Any of the draft models on the shelf, should be upgradeable via a simple
ROM flash. However, be advised the 802.11g spec is not what is was
originally planned to be. They toned it down somewhat, to maintain full
backward compatibility with 802.11b devices.

IMHO, just buy good quality 802.11b equipment!

Depends on implementation delays, production delays, inventory on hand of
draft-based devices, etc. I expect that these will probably start turning up
in September or so.

As far as which standard, that's a problem with the computer industry in
general: As soon as something comes out, it's obsolete! :-(

I started just a few weeks ago using a Wireless Network so don't know
much yet about Wi-Fi.

I did read the paragraph about 802.11g on page 212 of Wi-Fi Handbook -
Building 802.11b Wireless Networks by Frank Ortman & Konrad Roeder
McGraw-Hill Networking ISBN 0-07-141251-4.

<QUOTE>
802.11g is an extension to 802.11b and operates in the 2.4GHz band.
802.11g increases 802.11b's data rates to 54 Mbps using the same OFDM
technology used in 802.11a.
The range at 54 Mbps is less than the existing 802.11b APs operating at
11 Mbps.
