4320 Wins Replication Error

Ive just set UP a LAN to LAN VPN via 2 Hardware firewalls
and was trying to to get Push/Pull Wins replication to
work between the two seperate domains Wins servers. One
is a 2003 Server domain the other is a 2000 Server
domain. Replication did not happen and on one site the
4320 error
appeared in the event log "Another machine has sent a
name release message to this machine probably because a
duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network.
The IP address of the node that sent the message is in
the data.
Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name
is in the Conflict state".

Doing the NBTSTAT -n command the table showed a conflict
on an entry with the machine name of ADMINISTRATOR and a
public IP address that is nothing to do with our company
at all. I could ping this ADMINISTRATOR address and got a
reply. Does anyone no why this is the case ?
The above was done yesterday. An nbtstat -n command this
morning shows no such conflict but there is a
ADMINISTRATOR entry. Looking at both Servers Wins
databases. The site that did have the conflict does have
an entry for ADMINISTRATOR, the type is 03h messenger and
The Ipaddress and owner is the ip of the Server itself.
We also have a ADMINISTRATOR entry here same 03h type but
the ipaddress is a LAN PC but the owner is the server.

Can anyone offer any assistance ?

Well let's make this simple...
Is there a machine on each LAN called "Administrator"?

If yes, change one or both of them. That is not a very good name for a
machine anyway and is always going to cause confusion.

You sure you weren't mistaking the logged on user of the machine as the
machine name?

It isn't going to give a duplicate name error if there wasn't a duplicate
name somewhere. If in doubt you can always delete "suspect" entries from
both WINS servers. It if is a legitiment entry it will reenter itself after
a while. Also keep in mind that any dialup or VPN users will also end up in
the WINS server if their dialup settings (DHCP or otherwise) include a WINS
server, so these users are not allowed to have their machines named the same
as any other machine on the system either.

thanks for the reply.

It is strange as there is no client VPN dial in users or
no RAS users either. I will probably just delete the wins
entries and see if they return b4 retrying the
replication.
Another question do u think once wins replication is done
I should also configure DNS to replicate to each of the
seperate Domain controllers via secondary zones ?
I think this is not really needed as replictaion will
probably cause lots of traffic.

Thanks for the reply.

Im going to remove the entries and see if they reappear
before trying the wins replication again.

Once this is done is it work getting both domains DNS
replcating to each other via secondary Zones and
transfers, I belive that this will probably create alot
of not really needed traffic.

I may even just stick static Wins entries pointing to
each others servers and manually added DNS host entries.
Im not sure if the bosses will want full interdomain
browsing. they will probably just want drive mappings to
the servers across the vpn which is fine with the above
static entries and a trust relationship set up between
the domains .

There would be more traffic, and it would be on a slow link. I'm not sure
what to tell you specifically, but I usually follow the "keep it simple"
idea and I try to never make it more complicated than it has to be. I would
try to have to WINS servers at the opposite ends setup as equal "push-pull"
partners. The DNS I might not even mess with and just let it work using a
Trust,...I think there is less data traversing the slow link to keep a Trust
alive then there would be to make them part of the same AD Forest or
anything like that.

And DO NOT use static WINS entries for clients and servers that can
dynamically register! You'll only end up with more problems...
