I have Windows 2003 Server x64 SP1 set up as a file server. When there is
any SMB activity on the machine, whether initiated by the server or a
client, the networking breaks. It has a static IP, but can't ping anything,
local or not. I have latest drivers, BIOS and Windows Updates. I have to
reboot the machine to get the network back. The machine continues to
function normally in every respect except for the fact that it has no
networking.

What should I do?

Frosty.

Take a look here.

Installing security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
may cause network connectivity between clients and servers to fail:

I'd already tried this fix. No joy.

Last night, right clicking on a shared file from a client caused the server
to drop off the network.

Damn ! Stupid system ! Always the same bug... the netword falls down
when I'm uploading files on Win2003-SP1... pfff.

I don't understand why a server system can drops off with sharing
files... lol.

Does this server enforce SMB-signing in it's policy settings? Run RSOP.msc
to verify.

Delf, I figured the problem out last night. All is well in server land.

With a bit of luck, it might help you too.

I traced the problem to a driver update offered by Windows Update. If I
install the LAN driver that ships with the system (VIA Gigabit LAN - Rhine)
the File sharing works just fine. As soon as I install the update, it
breaks. I just rolled back and all is fine again.

My problem was due to Outpost Firewall ; when disable, the network does
not fall down...

I used the drivers shipped with the network card.

Thanks for your reply.
