3Mb Cable Internet and Dlink Router

I have a 3Mb cable internet connection through a Motorola SB5100 modem.
I also have a DLINK 604 Router through which I share my connection.
The problem I am having is that my bandwidth does not reach above 1.5Mb
and most the time 800-1000K when I go through the router. When I plug
the cable modem directly into a PC, I get the full 3Mb connection. Is
this just because it is a cheap router and won't support anymore
bandwidth?

You could have a Duplexing problem. Manually set the the computer to 100Mb/s half-duplex.

Dave

Is this the setting that should be used for Verizon DSL? My adapter has
a whole bunch of settings, is there a place that will tell me what the
optimal settings might be?

Thanks

The "optimal" setting will be based upon one you are connected to.
If a PC is connected to a Ethernet hub, the rules of Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision
Detection (CSMA/CD) are in effect and the the connection will be half duplex. If a PC is
connected to a Ethernet switch then you can effectively double the bandwidth by turning off
the Collision Detection in CSMA and the PC can send a packet at the same time as receiving a
packet. That's Full-Duplex operation.

Now considering Steve's post. If the PC's NIC is set to Full-Duplex when the DLink 604
can't handle the the sending and receiving packets at the same time, it will cripple his
communication. Usually with an Ethernet switch they use N-Way negotiation to get the right
setting. PCs don't do N-Way negotiation so you set the NIC of the PC to force its setting
and the Ethernet switch will setup accordingly. I don't know the DLink 604 if it has a 4
port E-switch or not but its a good place to start.

With my PCs connected to my Linksys BEFSR81, I know that it is a 8-port E-switch so I set
the computers to 100Mb/s @ Full Duplex.

These are my on board NIC's (Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection)
settings:

_Property_
_Value_
Adaptive Inter-Frame Spacing
1
Adaptive Link Response
Off
Adaptive Technology
On
Adaptive Transmit Threshold
200
Coalesce Buffers
8
Enable PME
No Action
Flow Control Settings
Generate and Respond
Link Speed & Duplex
100Mbps/Full Duplex
Log Link State Event
Enabled
Offload TCP Segmentation
Enabled
PCI Bus Efficiency
Disabled
QoS Packet Tagging
Disabled
Receive Descriptors
48
Retransmit Inter-Frame Spacing
10
Transmit Descriptors
16

Do I need to change any of them?

Thanks

What about the other settings? I don't know what happened to the
columns in my post.

Thanks

Coalesce Buffers = 16 ~ 32 (will use more RAM)
PCI Bus Efficiency = Enabled

The rest can be left alone.
