| Is this the setting that should be used for Verizon DSL? My adapter has
| a whole bunch of settings, is there a place that will tell me what the
| optimal settings might be?
|
| Thanks

The "optimal" setting will be based upon one you are connected to.
If a PC is connected to a Ethernet hub, the rules of Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision
Detection (CSMA/CD) are in effect and the the connection will be half duplex. If a PC is
connected to a Ethernet switch then you can effectively double the bandwidth by turning off
the Collision Detection in CSMA and the PC can send a packet at the same time as receiving a
packet. That's Full-Duplex operation.
Now considering Steve's post. If the PC's NIC is set to Full-Duplex when the DLink 604
can't handle the the sending and receiving packets at the same time, it will cripple his
communication. Usually with an Ethernet switch they use N-Way negotiation to get the right
setting. PCs don't do N-Way negotiation so you set the NIC of the PC to force its setting
and the Ethernet switch will setup accordingly. I don't know the DLink 604 if it has a 4
port E-switch or not but its a good place to start.
With my PCs connected to my Linksys BEFSR81, I know that it is a 8-port E-switch so I set
the computers to 100Mb/s @ Full Duplex.
