I've done this both with 3 and with the T-Mobile £1/day 3G service.
T-Mobile has worked fine for everything I wanted to work, though
with 3 I had trouble with an application I sometimes use (I can't
remember what it was now though; maybe ssh). I still use T-Mobile
occasionally.
You aren't supposed to use either of these services with a laptop,
by the way, so even if it works now I guess there is no guarantee
that they won't break something you want to work in future.
