3Com509b not conecting to nework

I'm trying to get Suse7.3 installed onto a computer without a CD-Rom
drive. Therefore I tried a network install.

My experiences until now:
- Boot disk & Kernel load OK.
- Module disk loaded OK.
- Installation screams: "No CD drive detected"; Selecting manual install.
- I ask the computer to load the network modules. Asks for 2nd module
disk; 3Com card loaded OK.
- Next, select install.
- Computer tries to find DHCP server (bootp/DHCP) and fails.
- Next it aks for an IP-number and a gateway, where I have no idea what
to enter so I stick with the defualt options.
- After entering the server IP, username and password, no connection is
made ("Cannot connect"). Server log show no login attempt.

Some logs:
Loading image "/var/adm/mount/net-mod.gz"
Executing "insmod isa-pnp isapnp_reset=0"
Using /modules/isa-pnp.o
Executing "insmod 3c509"
Using /modules/3c509.o
BOOTPclient broadcast...
..
..
..
No response from BOOTP server
bootpc failed to locate a network address

And another reads:

I've tried shutting plug&play on and off and setting the IRQ manually to
any possible value(i.e. IRQ=3,5,7,9,10,11,12,15), but the problem is
still not solved.

One other note: The network works fine on the previously installed
windows 98 partition (Including DHCP). But only when PnP is ON.

Some additional info as far as my knowledge goes:
Manufacurer: Compaq
Network card: 3Com 3c509b combo on a PCI port.
Pocessor: Pentium 1
HD: seagate 1.2 Gb (Should be enough)
Memory: 32 Mb (Should be enough)

Could somebody give me some pointers?

If you are using a modern PCI mobo, you may have to assign the IRQ to
the ISA bus in the BIOS manually.

No, the 509's an ISA card. Also make sure you have selected the right
media. Maybe the BNC or AUI port is selected if you have those on the
card. There's a DOS program to configure the 509 you can get from 3com's
site. There's also a Donald Becker written Linux one.

No: The 'BIOS' (a compaq doesn't have real bios, but a sort of
configuration partition) has the card set up for IRQ 3. I've also tried
those options, but that has no effect whatsoever.

Yes I've got those. Been fideling around with them.
By the way: Acoording to Mr. Beckers homepage there should be command
line options which set the tranciever and irq, like this:
insmod 3c509 xcvr=3 irq=10
However they just doesn't seem to have any effect.

You got me thinking there. There are three connectors on the card: a
BNC(10base2), a DB15 (AUI) and a RJ45 (10baseT). I started doing an
image search on altavista to see what these strange abriviations stood
for, and: I'm using a RJ45.

Now the big question is: How do I swap from the BNC to the 10BaseT?

BTW, note that the information you needed was all in your original post.
The 3c509 driver message said that it was using the BNC port.

I set mine to auto-detect the media. This seems to work well as long as
the RJ-45 is plugged into an active hub/switch.
