Hi.

Just upgraded a friend's 3Com 3CRWDR100A-72 from 1.07(?) to 2.05(?)
firmware (the latest anyway).

Reason for upgrade - frequent router disconnects on ADSL - this
problem has been described in this group and the latest firmware
identified as the fix.

I backed up the config as recommended and (as also described in this
group) I could not reload this backup config after the firmware upgrade
("File too short").

Not to worry I thought - just re-enter the userid and password -
from what I remember all the other router parameter values take (UK)
default.

Anyway ADSL does not sync / log on with these settings.

The BT test userid does successfully log on and allow acccess to
www.bt.net . Hence, the physical and Layer 2 (layer 3?) are working - I
don't know the xDSL terminology for those link layers.

So the symptoms all points at an invalid userid being sent from the
router - but my friend swears blind she is giving me the correct ADSL
userid and password from BT Openworld(?) Click(?) - that were working
before th efirmware upgrade.

Any ideas on where the problem might be?

Clive

That was probably me and it really has fixed it. I haven't had one
disconnect since upgrading.

Yep, I got that to.

Certainly sounds like an incorrect userid or password. You could downgrade
the router back to 1.05, reload your config, write down the settings then
upgrade the firmware again.

I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you the correct format for a BTO
username which might help you avoid any firmware shenannigans.

To conclude this

After much stress and ringing of hands - my friend suggested we switch
everything off and switch it on again.

I said this was unnecessary.

She did this anyway.

Bingo! The thing (3Com device) signed on with her BT userid and
password - seems stable now.

Thanks

Clive
