Using a Huawei E169G on Vista SP2 we only get a max connection speed of
195kb/s... any idea how I can get an idea of what the signal strength is
where I am since the USB software soen't appear to have the facility to
check this..I suspect we are about 200m from the antennae (there is a
cluster of 3 separate masts very close to us...which is also close to a
motorway).

Can you do a manual search to make sure you have 3g not 2g connection by
default possibly.

You should be able to pinpoint your mast here:

Great site thanks.... never thought of offcom... and as I suspected there is
a "3" mast within 200m that is on 2.1GHz and UMTS...which I take to be 3G?

Ahhh yes.... my PC has Vista...and the PC in question has XP SP2. Slip of
the brain!
