I posted this earlier today, but I thought I would repost it in hopes
of getting comments added to the thread that dealt with the original
question. I appreciate usenet dialogue, but there were 10 responses to
the original post that dealt with what the legal wattage should be for
wireless. Great discussion, but doesn't deal with the post.

Hopefully no one's offended.

I've heard several people lately talk about the extended range of
2WIRE wireless modem/router products.
One person told me that they had no coldspots in a 3 story building
and could get the signal 600ft outside when the 2wire was near a
window. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm trying to get a good
wireless signal in a 5 story building less than 70 ft. tall and wide -
with lots of walls. Some of our offices are also going to be moving
and I'm trying to decide on wireless vs. hardwired.

Does anyone have experience using 2Wire vs. another standard AP, such
as D-Link/Linksys?

Has anyone used a 2Wire to cover 3+ floors or where there are lots of
walls and other barriers?

I would hard wire the building. Wireless could work great for a day or a
week or a year. Or you could be out of business tomorrow because some
unknown interference has surfaced and taken down your wireless network.

It's unrealistic to expect a single access point to serve a 5-story
building, so plan on using multiple units -- and on wiring them to a
common switch. Since no two buildings are alike, a survey is the only
way you'll discover the number and location of access points you'll
need to get the coverage and performance you want. If this is a
business environment, I'll second the warnings others already have
given about the wisdom of using consumer class equipment in a
commercial setting and the riskiness of using license-free wireless
technology as your only source of secure, reliable networking.
