If you change your number after you have DSL supplied on the line it
can lead to all sorts of problems, eventually leading to loss of DSL
service & you having to pay a install charge to get it re-connected.
I don't know (but I've got a few guesses) why this happens as nobody
has been able to explain it to me, but I've had first hand experience
with a few cases over the years DSL has been available in my area.
