With 2mb and above bandwith now common, which are the download sites to match the service?

Now that 512kb bandwidth is regularly exceeded where is it likely
that downoads would be available to match, say 2mb?

I note that the likes of Epson seem to limit to 56kb any downloads of
their software/drivers.

Presumably BitTorrent activity can run very fast if the parties
involved adjust their settings, but which normal Web sites have
anything available to reach 2mb?

Many sites where I get my drivers normally max out my connection. (Nvidia,
Microsoft, Leadtek)

I've had a blistering 3MB/s downloading Win2000 SP2 from my college so the
microsoft servers must be as fast as hell and will sure max out your
connection.

Thanks Dan. Maybe I have made the wrong assumption. I suspected that
sites applied a limit of some kind to ensure that no single user took
up too much of the bandwidth.

Not sure why I assumed that. Must have picked up some comment in the
past. Until recently I had 512kb and am now on 2mb but even with 512kb
I seemed to have a maximum download speed/width(?) which equated to a
56k modem.

I hadn't imposed anything on my system to prevent exceeding 56k.

What are you using to measure the speed ? I have a firewall which reports
transfer speed in kilo BYTES whiel the connection is of course in millions
of BITS... Just one reason some things seem slower. If you want to check
a fairly fast (and sustained) speed test, try viewing the webcams from the
Boston University (<http://www.bu.edu/alumni/webcam/> )

I use Opera for downloads and the information shown when saving a file
also includes the speed of the connection.

I looked at the webcam pages. Although I can view the scenes I cannot
see a measure of the speed being used.

If you are using Win XP try the Task Manager and view Networking. If you
happen to have a 10/100 ethernet link on the PC, the graphs are more easily
readable if you can throttle down to 10 Mbps (eg using an old 10 Mbps hub!)

I was trying a speed test at <http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/>
but I don't trust it - <http://mywebpages.org/InternetFrog-20050824.jpg>
will show a couple of speed tests, and a section where the download speed
was double that of the speed test - using a Boston webcam as one source
of traffic. Anyway, you will surely see relative speeds to be able to
check what actual speeds you get... and some FTP reports show data and
time - try uploading a 50 MB file to webspace and then downloading it from
the server using FTP, then you can calculate/check speed from details it'll
report once the file is fully downloaded. Peter M.
