I've just installed Windows 2003 Server: Web Edition on one of our servers.
Did all the updates, and then configured what I needed for website hosting (FrontPage Extension, etc...). The server has two NIC cards - one for internal and one for external. The external NIC is setup with multiple IP addresses for the different websites (I know we could use one IP address and separate by domain name, but we have the IP addresses so we might as well use them). The are approx. 15 websites currently. After getting a few websites running we noticed that the external NIC seemed to be shutting down. I say seemed because from outside of our building we could access the website - or even ping the IP address. At the same time (while it was "down"), I used RDC to connect to another server in the same IP range (from outside the building), and ran a ping to the same IP address as the one that was failing from an outside network - and it was successfull. This showed that the network connection was still active, but I still couldn't access it from the outside. Repairing the connection works for a while, but it eventually goes down again. The time it stays up is variable - but I have noticed that it seems to go down about the same time every night (for the past 3-4 nights anyway) at some time between 12:30 AM and 12:45 AM. Sometimes the repair lasts for a number of hours during the day, and sometimes hardly an hour. Numerous searching led me to various website that mentioned this: http://www.howtonetworking.com/Troub...g/2003sp1a.htm as well as the KB article that says this. There were actually two hotfixes I applied that the article described something very similar to what I was experiencing: KB898060 and KB913446. However these apparently didn't work as it went down several times during last night. I would uninstall SP1 to see if that would fix the problem, mentions ASP.NET and several other things could be affected by uninstalling SP1 and I don't want to cause any problems for the websites being hosted. Any ideas on how to fix this? |

Incorrect configured multihomed computer may have name resolution issue. If the hotfix or modified MTU don't fix the problem, post back the result of ipconfig /all.

Thanks for the reply!
Yes I've applied the hotfix and around noon yesterday - even rebooted to make sure it took effect, and it still went down last night. Here's the result of ipconfig /all (modified to remove external identification for security - the details are still there): Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790] (C) Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp. We have some issues here.
1. It is recommended to use static IP on a server (instead of DHCP). 2. You should not setup two default gateways on a multihomed computers. Thanks Robert!
I always thought it would be better for a static IP on a server - I can't even remember why I made it DHCP. I assigned it a static address, and stopped the DHCP from using it (noticed also that it was on the "Reserved" list). I've removed one of the default gateways (specifically the one from the "Web" connection). We'll see how these changes go - I have seen it go a few days with going down, but lately it's been every day, so I'll know for certain that's it within a week (unless it goes down sooner). Thanks again Robert. "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" wrote: > We have some issues here. > > 1. It is recommended to use static IP on a server (instead of DHCP). > 2. That must have been the case. It has been a week now and that problem hasn't
shown it's ugly face. Thanks Robert - worked a charm.
