would it be a waste of time and money to get a router and wireless card for
my 233mghz 32ram Gateway laptop So that I can access my DSL connection.?

I mean, being that it's such a slow computer, would I even notice a
difference over dialup?

thanks
Tim

Oddly enough, I've just been experimenting with something very similar. I've
been trying out some wireless kit including a US Robotics PCMCIA card which I
tried in my old Gateway 450MHz laptop, and it works just fine. The computer
isn't any faster of course, but it has the same instant-access to the
internet as any other computer on a network with an ADSL connection. That
alone makes it much less frustrating to use than dial-up.

If you're considering continuing to use the laptop and it really has only
32Mb memory, then I would recommend increasing that to at least 256Mb
regardless of what you use it for. That really will make it seem faster.

Rod.

I think you have to match the PCMCIA card to the bus speed of the slot 16 or
32 bit.
I have no idea what speed you slot is.
Upgrading the ram would also help but on older laptops some of them had
limits
as how much ram you could install.
even if you could get it up to 64 or 128 would help.
What am I saying, I have a new dell inspiron 1100 and according to dell,
maximum is 512 meg.
This is there cheap model better ones have higher values.

thanks for the response.

This is the computer

I ordered 128mg of ram last night.

Now you've got me wondering if this computer will accept a wireless
card???????

Sure you would. Moreover, you wouldn't need to be tethered to a wall
jack to use it. I still use my 75 MHz Toshiba Libretto 50CT with 16 MB
RAM with an Orinoco Gold card all the time. Of course, it's running
FreeBSD so its memory requirements are not as severe as Windows. Still,
if you find the laptop useful, I'm guessing you'll find it more useful
with wireless rather than dialup.

I'm guessing that your old laptop supports only 16-bit (non card bus)
PCMCIA adaptors. If so, you should make sure you get a wireless card
that will work with your box. Also, if you have only 16-bit card support
in your laptop, your laptop won't notice any benefits from 802.11g over
802.11b (although if everything else on your network is 802.11g, adding
a "b" device to it will slow everything else down). Most of the 802.11g
cards I've seen are card bus, so I'd recommend looking for a card that's
specifically "b".

Hope this helps.

External ports: Two USB ports, FIR, serial
(16550A-compatible), parallel (bi-directional, EPP,
ECP), NTSC/PAL video out, PS/2 keyboard or
mouse, DC input, docking connector, PC Card
Type III or two Type I or II card socket, line in, mic,
headphone out, VGA external monitor

It says you have 1 Type III slot and 2 Type I or II slots, these are
what is used by the wireless nic.

This is on the http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/manuals/8504311.pdf
a link under one of the ones you provided.
