Dear readers

Problem: ICS stopped working and disappered after I installed SP1 to Windows
2003 Server Std.

I should find it under Network Connections, rightclick on the NIC and
Properties/Advanced but it's gone.

I have 2 NIC, everything worked before the upgrade and stopped working after
the reboot.

Any solution?

Best Regards Johan Ryberg

I am also having the same problems. However I went and uninstalled service
pack 1 and regained ICS. I'm actually thinking that maybe this weekend, I
will try 1 of 2 things. I will either turn off ICS on my server and then
install sp1 and then hopefully I can turn ICS back on, or I can turn off ics
and then turn on the Routing and VPN role of the server and then install
sp1.

What does anyone here think?

I shall test this at once. My server is not a 24/7 so I can play with it.

I will get back with the result.

[NOTE]
Uninstall is done, the ICS was NOT whown until I removed the Firewall option
under the OTHER NIC that was facing the LAN.

When the firewall of the LAN nic was disabled the ICS was shown under
Advanced of the WAN nic.
[/NOTE]

Uninstall and disable the ICS and reinstalled the SP1 is done and it did NOT
work. The problem is still there. The ICS is not visible after the install
of SP1, it was shown after the uninstall of the SP1.

Microsoft, fix this problem at once!

Thanks for testing, Johan, my server is 24/7 so its harder for me to test.

What about uninstalling SP1, then disabling ICS and instead turning on the
Remote Access/VPN role in the manage my server roles? Do you think that
might work?

I did not test that. I uninstalled SP1 again to make it work. My time this
week is limited and i'm not sure I will test again this week.

Regards Johan

OK, I don't know if this is the story you want to hear about but your
story sounded a lot like mine: windows 2003 standard server although
we did not use ICS with 2003 (didn't even know it was there), because
we use RRAS instead.
After installing SP1 I found out the RRAS service didn't work. No
problem: just go to administrive tools en configure RRAS.
The only problem was the message of Windows: please disable Firewall
and ICS. I even got a detailed instruction how to do this action.
Completed the instructions but no result. Windows persisted with the
message Disable ICS on your computer. Couldn't find anything else but
Firewall/ICS.
Removing cards, new cards, startup in safe mode blah blah blah.
Everytime the same result: Disable ICS.
Let's have a clear look at the services: yes, Windows Firewall / ICS
are disabled and stopped. But hey, what's this: the service RRAS is
stopped AND disabled? Why is this and why wasn't there a warning about
this when I tried to start de RRAS tool? Instead of that came this
stupid Disable ICS warning.

Enable RRAS and start the RRAS service, go to administrive tools,
start the RRAS tool and voila: no problem, no message again. Just use
RRAS as a NAT server does the same thing.
