so this might sound stupid and Im sure Im missing something simple but
recently I noticed that my linksys wireless routers wireless is
failing. So I have another linksys access point but I want to use
RRAS on my domain controller as a router for my home network. So the
DC has 2 nics. Only one being used right now. So theoretically this
is what I want to do. Plug my cable modem into nic1. Hook nic2 up to
my switch. The switch has 2 other servers and the wireless access
point on it that I'll have client laptops hooking upto. I have DHCP
setup and its handing out IP addresses properly to wireless devices.
So here are my questions...

What DHCP scope options do I need?

Any DNS settings?

And most importatnly what do I need to setup in RRAS? Statuc routes?

Thanks - jon

Normally, for security reasons, you don't want to connect a DC directly to
the Internet. Perhaps you can multihome one of the other servers and
install RRAS on it instead of on the DC...

That said, you want to enable network address translation in RRAS when you
set it up so that PCs on your network can communicate with the Internet.

In DHCP, you just want to make sure that the clients on each subnet have
the correct default gateway -- eg the IP address of the router or switch
that is the gateway to other subnets and the Internet. Because you have a
domain, it is also a good idea to configure the domain name option, and the
DNS and WINS server options (if you're using WINS). That way DHCP clients
will be able to contact all of the resources they need.

Well I got it all setup and it works great. I was able to setup the
port forwarding for exchange and IIS but I have one small problem
still. I have a client PC on the wireless that is trying to connect
to a offsite VPN and it keeps failing on connection and coming back
saying there is something wrong with my connection. The client is
trying to connect to a VPN using AT&T global network client. Is there
something special I have to do in RRAS to allow this to happen?

THanks - jon

Hi Jon --

I am not familiar with the ATT VPN client, so I'm not really sure what's
going on. It is possible you need an exception in your firewall or
something, not sure -- that might be something to investigate, and perhaps
other folks more familiar with that software can assist.

Probably the best approach is to examine the ATT VPN client docs and find
out how to deploy it when it is communicating with the VPN server through a
NAT/firewall device. They should have deployment info that covers this
(fairly common) scenario.

I agree. Sadly I only have client info and nothing about actual setup
as far as the server end goes. Is there anywhere else I can look.
Hate to be such a pest but I really have no documentation. Its weird
because before my linksys crapped out it worked on that router with no
additional setup

Thanks - jon

If it worked before you will be able to get it to work again -- the change
was adding the NAT device, so I would focus on that. I don't think you need
to know how the server is configured to resolve this issue.

I did an Internet search on AT&T VPN client and got over a half million
hits. The first two are:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...t/VPN_help.htm

http://www.ap.att.com/services/ipvpn...vpn_tunnel.jsp

I am afraid you will have to take it from there.
