Dear Support,

We are a corporation based in Macau. We have a small branch office in Hong
Kong. We would like to replicate data between our 2 sites. Initial
investigation shows that we can use the new DFS file replication as part of
the Branch Office methodology, rather than buying a 3rd-party product. The
servers at each site both are W2K3, 1 is SP1, the other has no major upgrades
at all.

We have Select agreements and have the CD's for W2K R2 on site.

Is there a licensing implication if we upgrade these servers? Or is it just
counted as a version upgrade?

I have asked my reseller and MS licensing, they were not sure.

Many Thanks

Django Smith

Hello Django,

For the R2 you have to use a new server license. Client licenses are not
involved.

Best regards

I saw this in the AD newsgroup. Honestly if you want to post to multiple
groups, it is to your and our benefit to cross-post instead of multipost).
Read my signature below to show you how.

What Joe meant is there is notthing to worry about your current client
license (CAL) count, and the CD2 upgrade to R2 will not change anything on
your servers as far as settings or anything else other than upgrading
certain features, such as the schema and other features that are based on
the new updates to the schema.

But to install R2, you will need to BUY A LICENSE to be able to install it.

Curious, do you have a copy of R2 but you do not have a license?
