I am going to install a 2003 Server DC into a network
that runs NT 4.0 servers. As long as the 4.0 Servers are
just role servers I should not have a problem with them
interacting with the 2003 server on the domain. Correct
or am I wrong? Also to note, one of the 4.0 Servers is
running Exchange 5.5. I don't know if that would make a
difference.

As long as you have the latest SPs on the member servers, I don't see any
problems. We have several NT 4.0 member servers in our mixed mode AD2003
domain and haven't had any problems with them.

Exchange 5.5 requires a domain, so you must have an NT4 domain - so
therefore the NT4 servers are not just "role servers". You must have 1 PDC
and perhaps a BDC or two?

You won't have any problems installing W2K3 into a new domain and
establishing a trust between the NT4 domain and the new Active Directory
domain, but you won't be able to install W2K3 as a new domain controller
into your existing NT4 domain.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326209 - you could install your new
server as an NT4 BDC, then promote it to the PDC then upgrade that to a W2K3
domain controller.

Exchange 5.5 will work fine in a 2000 or 2003 Domain. Unlike Exchange2000
or Exchange2003, the older Exchange 5.5 is not domain dependent and uses its
own built-in Directory instead. It would even work fine in a Unix
environment where there was no Domain at all as long as it had its own set
of local user accounts for the mailboxes.

Exchange 5.5 requires a domain (whether it be NT4 or W2K), it won't install
on a workgroup server.
