I'm having a problem sharing a dial-up internet connection 2 laptops
w/o a router. I've read that it is possible using XP's ICS. I've
gone to practicallynetwork.com followed the direction with no luck.
Can anyone give me guidance or a step by step instruction on how to do
this. I've tried XP's wizard with no luck either. Do I need a
router? Would it be easier?

One laptop is the new gateway M500 with an integrated wireless network
adapter. The other laptop has the Wireles-B notebook adapter from
linksys. I pretty much just want to share the internet connection
between the two laptops. It really doesn't need to share the printer,
but I would like to share files between the two.

Thanks for everyone's response in advance.

Warning: I'm NOT and expert. However, this sounds similar to the problems I
encountered (and which drove me potty for days) when I set up a wired
network between my desktop and laptop (both XP) a few months ago (now
switched to wireless though). I'm assuming that your actual networking
side of things is working and that your problem is simply with the internet
sharing. If so, you need a proxy server - AnalogX's freeware item works
fine for me (www.analogx.com). There is a tutorial about this at the
following link:

If I have misunderstood your problem or my advice is simply crap, I
apologise!

When I got my router, I was up and running with in 20 minutes!

Up and running in twenty minutes. Don't have to leave "the" PC on all the
time. Good protection by putting your PC behind a NAT router, not directly
connected to the internet.

I don't understand. To use the wireless connection without an access point
you must put the adaptors in AdHoc mode. Check to see what mode they are in.

You do not need a router to share a dialup connection. I share a dialup
between desktop machines using a USB wireless adaptor in each. To setup ICS
on XP, you need to use the Home Networking wizard to setup each machine
(even if not an XP machine!). You setup the PC with dialup to be an ICS Host
and the other to be an ICS Client. When the adaptors connect, the client
automatically starts sharing. Just open a browser and go.

There is material in the XP help on ICS that you may find valuable.
