Hi,

I was just wondering if someone could let me know if the following is the
best way to setup a single domain between two physical sites.

Site 1 Server
Global catalog server
DHCP - only assigns IP addresses to site 1. (192.x.x.x)
Preferred DNS - Site 1
Alternate DNS - blank

Site 2 Server
DHCP - only assigns IP addresses to site 2. (10.x.x.x)
Preferred DNS - Site 2
Alternate DNS - Site 1

Thanks,
Kevin.

I would also set site 2 to only use the local DNS server (ie no
alternate DNS setting). Then set up each DNS server to be a secondary for
the other. Then each DNS server will be able to resolve DNS requests for
either site (because it will have a copy of the "other" site's DNS records).

Adding to Bill's comment, I would also make a DC in Site2 and also make it a
Global catalog server. You should always design sites with the idea in mind
that what happens when connectivity is lost beyond the site? If you have an
Exchange server (I'm assuming you don't since you didn't mention that) in
the site or Outlook clients neither will work without a GC.

And I would add.. :-) ....

Nobody ever mentioned the "Sites" object in AD. Shouldn't that enter into
this as well since AD handles replication differently between sites due to
the slow link that usually exists between Sites?
If "AD Sites" aren't used then AD assumes a "full speed" LAN connection
exists between the two DCs and expects full normal speeds for
replication,...which might not really exist.
