OK, about to get my MAC and leave them after about two months of total
non-service - can't get answers for these 2 from them:

1. Why could BT give me an 8meg connection when they can only give 2meg?
2. Why would the connection stop working for long periods without
disconnecting? I get maybe an hour a day when I can view the simplest of web
pages, other wise everything times out, this all happens without dropping
the connection.

Kev

1. my guess is that BT are offering 'up to' 8 meg, max adsl rather than
fixed 2 meg service. this can be anything from 512k to the 8 meg
2. maybe dns cache in your router is filling, try setting dns servers in
your operating system instead, or get a new router.

btw, i'm not defending tiscali, they are cr&p, but BT aint much better

dslzoneuk.net ranks tiscali 33rd/35, and BT 32nd as you havent signed
anything yet, i'd suggest looking at one of the top 5 (also, many have 1
month contracts and free migration, so if you don't get what you
expect -leave).
don't be swayed in your decision by free router or software as good routers
can be bought for about £20, and antivirus software can be free

Well when I was with BT, I connected at 8 meg all the time and could
download at a constant 500kps from a good server.

I tried the dns settings and in about 10 weeks tiscali blamed my problem on:

1. the settling period
2. being on max instead of 2 meg (they told me I could have max at first)
3. internet explorer's cookies ( i use netscape or firefox)
4. the BB filters
5. the supplied modem (tried 2 and my netgear router)
6. my PC! (even brought my dad's over to try)
there were other attempts to appease me, none of which worked either.

Probably they are only prepared to offer you 2Mbps using BTwholesale
Datastream. I don't think they ever really bothered to offer MAX even
though it did become available to Datastream customers.

BT and "most" UK ISPs will offer services based on BT IPStream and will
have no problem offering MAX.
