Hi all

I got a Win 2003 server where i installed Portal on. There is a couple of
other apps also runing on. I was working the whole time with a 100Mb network
card in there which has a IP 192.168.150.157. 2 days agso i discovered there
is another NIC in the server and that one is a 1Gb NIC but his ip is
192.168.150.176. Am i right if i say the server and all its network traffic
use the 1'st NIC which is the smaller/slower one????and if so how can i tell
the traffic to use the faster NIC also. Is there a way that i can assign 2
NIC the same IP adress?

Pls help me? I want to use the faster NIC also but i don't neccesarily want
to change the IP of the PC because quite a lot of stuff point to the
192.168.150.157 IP which is the 100Mb NIC.

Hope this is clear and someone can help me.

Sorry

just discovered i can just type \\192.168.150.176\x.x and i will be using
the faster NIC and connect to the same box. So i can just change some of the
paths that connect to this machine from \\192.168.150.157\x.x to
\\192.168.150.176\x.x to use the faster NIC

PS: I read on the net that it is NOT possible to give 1 IP to different
NIC's

You can set the DNS so the computer is pointed to the gigabit interface as
standard. You can combine network cards, it's called adaptor teaming, and it
basically increases thoughput.

Actually, You can with teaming software- we have 4 nics with 1 IP on our HP
nas server

Hello,

Most servers on the market in the last few years have a feature called NIC
Teaming where you can bind the two NICs together to have a single IP address
and to provide additional bandwidth and fault tolerance. Setting this up
usually isn't difficult and is configured through the NIC driver. To have a
single IP address on the team the driver creates a virtual NIC that acts like
a switch to use ARP to route traffic on layer 2. (Note that it does some
interesting things between the switch to make the ARP thing work, but that is
a topic for another posting.)

If you're just going to use DNS to route traffic to the faster NIC, you'll
want to ensure that the traffic on the way back to you goes over the correct
NIC so you'll want to change the binding order on the NIC to give the faster
one preference. I would be interested to know why they are different speeds
as they are usually identical -- this would imply different port speeds on
the switch.

If it just comes down to using the faster one, move the IP there and disable
the other one.

Sounds gud, how do i do this?

Sounds even better, is it software that i download or do i do it in the
config of the NIC's

I don't know why they are different speeds, i got the server like this as
another clients were using it before.

Don't neccesarily wanna disable one as i want to use the extra
speed/resources that i have available.
