I have a desktop wired to router and laptop connected
wireless. It has been working fine for 2 years. Now all
of a sudden, my laptop only works on the internet when the
desktop is shut off. I checked all the settings, and
everything I can think of and nothing works. When I use
the laptop at work, if finds signal and everything is
fine. Any body know what is going on?

Run ipconfig on both computers. Check that they have
different MAC addresses and IP's, and DNS and gaetway point
to the router

It's probably a misconfiguration or viruses. Run a virus
check.

Then run the MBNU on the laptop. It should show you MAC and
IP's. If it doesn't connect look under the router's
security/logs for any messages and check the usual things
(same channel, SSID, WEP key on card and router).

Then check the TCP/IP stack -- is it set to dynamic and no
DNS/gateway assigned? If you go through the dialog boxes
you should get to the network driver, and it should list a
MAC address. Each computer should have a unique IP and MAC
address. The IP's should look like 192.168.2.x

I have checked all the setting..channels (even changed
channels), ssid, wep, etc....everything looks ok. I will
run the MBNU if you can tell me how to do it. I never
heard that before. But all settings are ok.

thanks

MBNU = MS Broadband Network Utility that comes with the MS
wifi hardware. If you installed the CD, you should have on
the computer (on the startup group), unless you installed it.

You are running an MS router, right? MN100/500/700?

If you are not, the problem could be on the router -- maybe
it doesn't support NAT or it's not configured for NAT. You
would have to look at the manufacturer web site. If NAT
isn't supported, you would need to have two IP's from the
ISP (but is cheaper to just get a router with NAT, or just
use XP ICS)

Lilo thanks for sticking with me on this one. I reset the
basestation and setup new wirless card on laptop. My
desktop is perfect (internet,etc...) my laptop MBNU will
not let me use the base station management tool. It is
greyed out. But on the MBNU it says my ip address is:
0.0.0.0 it has nothing for the gateway address. This
help ya?

That means it didn't pull an IP from the sweex. Do you have
an error log or something on the sweex?

You can always try assigning a static IP to the laptop...

Actually... change the MN500 back to router mode, then
disable the firewall and DHCP, and then put it back into
bridge mode. See if it works then

the laptop with a sledgehammer and now I have no

left the 2 computers on for several hours and when I came
back to check on the laptop, an ip address was assigned
automatically and everything works!

Thanks alot fellas
